On December 14, 1971, the intellectuals were killed by the Pakistani invaders to make Bengal destitute. In memory of the intellectuals, the first Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Tajuddin Ahmed, declared 14th December as Intellectuals' Day. Martyred Intellectuals Day

December 14 Martyred Intellectuals Day. Intellectuals generally refer to those who contribute to nation building through mental or intellectual labor rather than physical labor. And intellectuals are those who are intelligent people. In one word intellectual means the writer who helped Bengal in the great liberation war through writing and this definition is given in Shaheed Buddhijibi Kosa book published by Bangla Academy.

Ever since the beginning of the liberation war in 1971, the Pakistani occupation forces have been killing the intellectuals of Bangladesh to demoralize Bengal. When they realize that their defeat is certain, they plan Bengali intellectuals ie Bengali poets, writers, philosophers, scientists, painters, teachers, researchers, journalists, lawyers, doctors, engineers, architects, sculptors, government and private employees, politicians, philanthropists, All related to film, drama and music

They identify individuals and plan to kill them. That is, 20 thousand intellectuals are identified to kill them. However, even though intellectuals have been killed since the start of the war, it was planned to demoralize Bengal on December 10 and for this reason curfew was renewed on December 4 in Dhaka and the plan of December 10 was implemented on December 14. And on the night of December 14, about 200 intellectuals

They were taken to Mirpur, Nakhalpara, Mohammadpur and Rajar Bagh in Dhaka with their hands, legs and eyes tied from their homes. Major General Rao Farman Ali was the main mastermind behind the killing of martyred intellectuals. And his associates were Bridgey Aslam, Colonel Taj, Captain Tarek, Colonel Taher, Dr. Mohr Ali, Vice-Chancellor and Professor Dr. Syed Sajjad Hossain, Al Badr ABM Khalek Majumdar Chowdhury, Moinuddin,

According to Asafuzzaman Khan and their plans, the intellectuals of Bengal were killed on 14th December. The Pakistani army killed 1,111 intellectuals of Bengal and the most killed were in the capital Dhaka and their number was 149. Zahir Raihan was the head of intellectuals of Bangladesh. He said that the Pakistani invasion forces could not kill the intellectuals as per their plan and they precisely listed the intellectuals to make Bengal demented.

However, Zahir Raihan disappeared on January 30, 1972. The first Prime Minister of Bengal, Tajuddin Ahmed, declared 14th December as Intellectuals Day and since then 14th December is Martyred Intellectuals Day of Bangladesh.

On December 14, the Pakistani invasion forces killed the intellectuals of Bengal and left them in various slaughterhouses. After the final independence of Bangladesh i.e. on 16th December, their mutilated dead bodies were found in different places. Although intellectuals were killed on 14 December 1971, no case was filed against them. Finally, on September 24, 1972, the first case was filed against the martyred intellectuals at Ramna Police Station in Dhaka and this case was filed by Farida Banu, sister of Professor Ghiyas Uddin. 14th December is a memorable day in the history of Bengal.
